Marijuana is seen as a harmful drug by many people who want it to be completely banned by the government authorities. But have they ever considered the other side of the picture? The picture where this similar drug is providing relief to the sick? While we and the rest of the world is deeply engrossed in the debate considering its pros and cons, the real significance of marijuana and its products is witnessed by the patients and the medical world. Marijuana, or cannabis as we also know it, is a naturally occurring plant. The various parts of the plant- roots, stem, leaves and flowers are used to derive a psychoactive substance called Tetrahydrocannabinol. This substance is associated with the drowsy feeling that is induced by the consumption of the cannabis. It induces sleep. Cannabis is available in the form of derivatives or as the dried parts of the plant. The sativa, indica and hybrid extracts with the best THC quantities are sold for affordable prices at the licensed dispensaries to the patients with a valid doctor’s prescription. Due to these features, the cannabis products are used to aid in the treatment of many serious illnesses, the likes of which include cancer, tumors, chronic pain, severe nausea, vomiting. It is also helpful in alleviating pain that arises due to chemotherapy in cancer patients. Research is being carried on in this field to find more medical uses for the same product. One major factor that can be related to its use by the patients is that marijuana is thought to have lesser or no side effects when compared to the synthetic drugs that are made in the laboratories. So, the argument above proves that marijuana is a boon to the medical world and to the patients for whom it is the only source of relief and hope.
